Rwanda Cuts Ties with Belgium Amid Accusations of Interference and Neocolonialism

Rwanda has severed diplomatic relations with Belgium, effective immediately, citing Belgium’s alleged interference in regional conflicts and its historical role in destabilizing Rwanda.

The decision was made after careful consideration of several factors, including Belgium’s actions during the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Rwanda accuses Belgium of consistently undermining its interests and taking sides in the regional conflict.

Rwanda also criticized Belgium’s historical role in fueling ethnic extremism, which led to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Furthermore, Rwanda accused Belgium of allowing its territory to be used by groups that propagate genocide denial and sustain genocidal ideology.

The Rwandan government stated that their decision reflects their commitment in safeguard its national interest.

“Yesterday’s decision reflects Rwanda’s commitment to safeguard our national interest and the dignity of Rwandans, as well as upholding the principles of sovereignty, peace and mutual respect,” the Rwandan government stated.

They added on saying that all Belgium diplomats in Rwanda should leave within 48 hours.

“All Belgium diplomats in Rwanda are required to leave the country within 48 hours. In compliance with the Vienna convention, Rwanda will assure the protection of the premises, property and archives of the Belgian diplomatic mission in Kigali.”
