President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday held a state banquet in honour of the newly elected International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry at State House, where he described her exploits as a sign of Africa’s readiness to lead.

Coventry made history as she became the first African and female President to land the post. Speaking at the banquet, President Mnangagwa praised Coventry’s remarkable achievement, saying her victory inspired pride in Zimbabwe and the entire African continent.

He added that her leadership has made a significant impact in Zimbabwe, with notable successes in various sporting codes, including netball, soccer, rugby, and cricket.

“The Honourable Minister and Incoming President we are celebrating today, oversaw the construction of multi-purpose facilities in disadvantaged areas across the country. These include Chambuta in Chiredzi; Rafamoyo in Gutu; Mabhikwa in Lupane and Karigamombe in Zvimba, among others,” President Manchester said.

He also acknowledged Coventry’s efforts in promoting sports integrity, anti-doping measures, and athlete welfare, which have laid a strong foundation for the future of sports in Zimbabwe.

“Since her tenure, the Zimbabwe Senior Netball team, the Gems, qualified for the Netball World Cup on two occasions, the National Soccer Team, the Warriors qualified for AFCON, and the men’s Rugby Team scooped the African Championship, among others,” the President said.

Coventry, a seven-time Olympic medalist and former world record holder, will assume office on June 23, 2025, after a handover ceremony from outgoing President Thomas Bach.
