An outbreak of bedbugs (Tsikidzi) has hit Mbare in areas like Matererini and Matapi flats, the City of Harare has confirmed.

In a statement, Council Spokesperson Stanley Gama said the local authority will start spraying the affected areas to avert the outbreak which has made living unbearable for the people.

He said spraying will start today, and encouraged residents to corporate with the teams that will conduct the exercise.

“The teams will also be conducting awareness campaigns on factors that speeds up such infestations such as overcrowding and how to prevent infestations even in those overcrowded areas.

“It is therefore important for residents in and around Mbare Flats and other areas to be aware of the factors that lead to such infestations,” did Gama.

Residents were encouraged to practice hygiene to help control the spread of bedbugs.

“Spraying alone will not solve this problem as bedbugs hide in small gaps like on beds, sofas, wardrobes and walls thus regular physical cleaning is required where chemicals can’t reach,” he said.
