Five people perish in Gweru Bus Crash

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that five passengers, including a four-year-old child, lost their lives in a tragic bus accident near Fairmile Hotel in Gweru on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred when a Hungwe Coaches bus overturned after the driver failed to navigate a traffic circle.

According to National Police Spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the bus was traveling from Botswana when the driver lost control, resulting in the fatal accident.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident involving a Hungwe Bus in which five people were killed while 21 others were injured today at around 0600 hours at a roundabout near Fairmile Hotel, Gweru,” Commissioner Nyathi said in a statement.

The ZRP initially reported conflicting numbers of fatalities, with some sources indicating six deaths.

However, Commissioner Nyathi clarified that five passengers were confirmed dead, including four female adults and one female juvenile.

“Among the dead are four female adults and one female juvenile; 10 of the 21 injured passengers are admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital,” he added.

The injured passengers are currently receiving medical attention, with 10 of them admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital. Commissioner Nyathi emphasized that no other vehicle or party was involved in the accident, stating, “There was no other vehicle or party involved in the accident besides the bus.”

In light of the incident, the ZRP has urged social media users to be responsible and respect the privacy of the accident victims and their relatives.

“We also urge the people who are using social media to be responsible and respect the accident victims and their relatives’ privacy,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
