SUNGURA musician Paradzai Mesi has sparked concerns about his well-being and commitment to his career after a shameful show at Somandla “Mafia” Ndebele’s album launch at Steak House Pub & Grill in Waterfalls, Harare. Mesi, dressed in a suit, took to the stage but struggled to stand and sing, relying on the microphone stand for support.

The audience was dismayed as Mesi addressed them in English with incoherent words, and his off-key singing created discord.

Despite efforts by Alick Macheso’s vocalist and drummer, Barnabas Mandipota, to support him, Mesi’s performance was cut short when bouncers escorted him off the stage.

Mesi’s antics didn’t end there, as he continued to argue with the bouncers, complaining about being unfairly treated. When questioned about his behavior, Mesi replied, “Zviriko wangu. Ndambomwira mwira but handina kudhakwa muboora,” which translates to “It’s my thing. I was just enjoying myself, but I wasn’t drunk.”

Mesi’s history of alcohol abuse is well-documented, and his recent behavior raises serious concerns about his well-being and commitment to his career.

In 2023, he had a brush with the law for allegedly stealing from a shop in Glendale, but fellow musician Mudiwa Hood bailed him out and provided him with support.

Mesi’s actions not only spoiled Soma’s special night but also risked undoing the progress he has made with the help of others.

Somandla Ndebele, however, showed remarkable professionalism and patience, allowing Mesi to continue with his performance despite the chaos.

The incident has raised questions about Mesi’s rehabilitation and whether he requires further help to overcome his dependence on alcohol.

Mesi’s team was visibly shocked by their band leader’s behavior, and it remains to be seen whether he will seek help to address his issues.
