The Government of Zimbabwe has launched a national measles-rubella vaccination campaign backed by a US$1.9 million commitment from the state, targeting all children aged six to 59 months across the country.

Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, officially kicked off the campaign at Stoneridge Clinic in Harare, emphasizing the nation’s determination to control preventable diseases, particularly as global funding for such initiatives becomes tighter.

“The Government has committed US$1.9 million toward operational costs, demonstrating national ownership of disease control efforts as global funding shrinks,” Dr. Mombeshora stated.
The campaign, scheduled to run until Friday, aims to provide children with the vital measles-rubella vaccine and essential Vitamin A supplementation.

The vaccinations are being offered free of charge at all clinics, hospitals, and through mobile outreach teams deployed in every district.

In his address, the Minister issued a firm call to action against vaccine hesitancy, urging parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive the life-saving protection.
“This campaign is sanctioned by the Government of Zimbabwe for all children, regardless of religion, beliefs, or social standing,” Dr. Mombeshora asserted. “Religious and cultural beliefs should never prevent a child from receiving life-saving protection.”

The Minister highlighted the dual benefits of the new campaign, which introduces the measles-rubella combination vaccine. “Vaccination against measles and rubella offers dual protection in a single, safe dose, preventing suffering, disability and death,” he explained.
