The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has expressed grave concern over the recent political and security developments in Madagascar, following reports of an attempted coup d’état.
In response to the crisis, SADC has announced plans to deploy a fact-finding mission to the island nation to facilitate dialogue and support efforts towards restoring institutional normalcy and national cohesion.
The mission, led by the SADC Panel of Elders, aims to engage with the government and other national stakeholders in efforts to de-escalate tensions and foster a conducive environment for inclusive dialogue.
“We are committed to safeguarding constitutional order and regional peace,” said Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of Malawi and Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
SADC has urged all parties involved in the current crisis to exercise maximum calm and restraint, respect the rule of law, and engage in inclusive dialogue to resolve differences peacefully.
“No further Malagasy lives should be lost due to the unrest,” the SADC statement read.
The regional bloc has also expressed deep regret over the loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property resulting from recent demonstrations.
The fact-finding mission will be led by Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda, former President of the Republic of Malawi and Member of the SADC Panel of Elders. Dr. Banda has urged all stakeholders in Madagascar to remain hopeful, expressing her firm belief that the mission will pave the way for the restoration of peace and stability.
“The mission will identify the key issues underpinning the current political and security situation,” SADC said.
SADC reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting Madagascar in its efforts to restore peace, uphold constitutional order, and safeguard democratic governance.
The regional bloc has emphasized the importance of unity, solidarity, democracy, and the rule of law in achieving peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
The mission’s findings and recommendations will be presented to the Chairperson of the SADC Organ and subsequently to the SADC Organ Troika Summit.
