Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has sparked controversy by appointing her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, as Deputy Minister for Education, and her son-in-law, Mohamed Mchengerwa, as Health Minister.

This move has raised concerns about nepotism, with critics questioning whether the appointments were based on merit or family ties.

“The appointment of family members to key positions risks undermining institutional credibility and public confidence,” said critics, arguing that the decisions blur the line between public service and personal interests.

However, supporters argue that Wanu and Mchengerwa have the necessary experience and qualifications for their roles.

Wanu, 43, is the Member of Parliament for Makunduchi, a constituency in Zanzibar, and retained her seat in the October 29, 2025, general elections.

Mchengerwa, 46, represents Rufiji in the eastern Pwani Region.

President Suluhu Hassan’s cabinet also includes Ridhwani Kikwete, son of former President Jakaya Kikwete, as Minister of Public Service Management and Good Governance.

The president has appointed 27 ministers and 29 deputy ministers, removing seven senior officials from the previous cabinet.

“The president is selecting competent figures she trusts to drive her policy agenda,” said supporters, defending the appointments as a move to ensure effective governance.

The appointments come after President Suluhu Hassan’s landslide victory in the October 29, 2025, presidential election, where she secured nearly 98% of the votes.

However, the election was marred by allegations of irregularities and international concerns over restrictions on freedoms.
