Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has urged youths in his country to shift their focus from European football to productive activities that can drive national development.
In a recent address, Museveni emphasized that excessive engagement with foreign leagues does not contribute to personal growth or Uganda’s progress.
“While sports are good for entertainment, obsessing over foreign leagues contributes nothing to personal growth or national development,” Museveni said, stressing the need for young people to redirect their energy toward education, skills, innovation, and income-generating ventures.
Museveni’s remarks come amid concerns about Uganda’s economic challenges and the need for youth to play a more active role in driving growth.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some arguing that football provides entertainment, socialization, and mental relaxation, while others agreeing that excessive focus on sports can distract from productive pursuits.
