The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) is gearing up for the 24th National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), with a record 1,117 entries received as of last week, according to NACZ officials.

The submission window closes today, and organisers expect more entries to come in as creatives rush to meet the deadline.

According to NACZ, the high volume of entries is a testament to the hunger for recognition and validation among Zimbabwean artists, despite the challenges facing the industry.

“The volume of entries does not always reflect readiness, as many submissions remain technically incomplete,” NACZ said, urging artists to ensure they attach all necessary supporting materials, including downloadable links to their work.

The council is pleased with the digital shift, with most submissions lodged online, marking a significant improvement in the sector’s administrative processes.

“This year’s digital turnout marks tangible progress,” NACZ said, highlighting the sector’s adaptability to modern systems.

However, the surge in entries has reignited debates about the structure and balance of NAMA categories.

Critics argue that some categories, such as Music and Film, dominate in numbers and influence, overshadowing others like Spoken Word and Dance, which have limited subcategories despite their growing national footprint.

“The Music and Film categories continue to dominate both in numbers and influence, overshadowing others such as Spoken Word and Dance, which remain limited in subcategories despite their growing national footprint,” critics said.

The NACZ has introduced new categories, including Fashion and Digital Media, which have been welcomed by the industry.

However, some argue that these categories are not comprehensive enough, overlooking key players in the creative ecosystem.

“The awards still overlook stylists, runway producers, make-up artists and costume designers, who are also key players in the creative ecosystem, especially in pageantry and film,” critics noted.

As adjudication begins, public attention shifts to the awards ceremony on February 28 at the Harare International Conference Centre.

This year’s event will be hosted by a new team, Scarlet Media and Events Evolution, adding to the pressure and anticipation.

NACZ officials are confident that the event will be a success, with the new hosts bringing fresh energy to the proceedings.

The 24th NAMA promises to be a celebration of Zimbabwe’s vibrant creative industry, with the best artists across various disciplines set to be recognised.
