Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite technology in 14 African markets, aiming to provide high-speed mobile connectivity in areas lacking terrestrial network infrastructure.
The satellite service, launching in 2026, will initially support data applications and text messaging for compatible smartphones.
According to Airtel Africa, this partnership will enable customers with compatible smartphones in regions without terrestrial coverage to access network connectivity through Starlink.
The collaboration aligns with the company’s mission to improve customer experience and expand reliable connectivity.
“Airtel Africa remains committed to delivering great experience to our customers by improving access to reliable and contiguous mobile connectivity solutions,” Taldar said.
Starlink’s Vice President of Sales, Stephanie Bednarek, described the initiative as a major leap for connectivity on the continent.
“For the first time, people across Africa will stay connected in remote areas where terrestrial coverage cannot reach,” Bednarek said, adding that the partnership will bring life-changing connectivity and next-generation high-speed broadband.
The partnership will leverage Starlink’s constellation of over 650 low-Earth orbit satellites, providing seamless connectivity to rural, remote, and underserved communities.
Airtel Africa will handle mobile network integration, while Starlink will provide satellite capacity.
This move underscores a broader strategy to close Africa’s persistent connectivity gaps, particularly in rural communities where reliable mobile service can have significant economic and social benefits.
The service will complement existing terrestrial infrastructure, filling coverage gaps in rural areas, national parks, border regions, and offshore locations.
Availability in each country will depend on local regulatory approvals.
Airtel Africa’s partnership with Starlink is part of a larger trend of African telecom operators turning to satellite solutions to expand connectivity.
Other operators, such as Orange, Safaricom, and MTN, are also exploring or integrating satellite technologies.
