A 39-year-old man from Chief Neshuro area passed away unexpectedly at his girlfriend’s home last week after a reported illness, prompting police to issue a public appeal for early medical intervention.

Kelvin Tarungirira died on the night of 7 March at a residence in Gwareva Village under Chief Chitanga, after complaining of chest and stomach pains for two days.

His death has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about the importance of seeking timely medical care.

Providing details of the incident, the Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, confirmed the circumstances surrounding Tarungirira’s death.

He used the opportunity to advise the public on health precautions.

“We urge members of the public to seek medical attention early whenever they experience serious symptoms to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol, especially when feeling unwell,” Inspector Dhewa said.

According to a police report, the sequence of events began on the afternoon of 3 March. Tarungirira left his own home around 2 PM, telling his family he was heading to Rutenga in search of employment.

However, he never made it to the town.

Instead of going to Rutenga, Tarungirira went to visit his girlfriend at her residence.

He remained there for several days without incident until the morning of 6 March. Around 7 AM, he began to complain of severe pain in his chest and stomach.

Despite these complaints, the day took a turn when he engaged in social drinking.

Inspector Dhewa explained that even after the symptoms appeared, Tarungirira spent the day consuming Marula beer with his girlfriend.

This detail underscores the police spokesperson’s warning against ignoring physical distress.

The following day, 7 March, Tarungirira’s condition deteriorated significantly.

He attempted to travel back to his own home but felt too weak to make it to the bus stop.

Forced to abandon his journey, he returned to his girlfriend’s homestead to rest.

As the night progressed, his situation became critical.

Inspector Dhewa elaborated on the final moments before Tarungirira’s passing.

“Around 9 PM, he began groaning in pain,” the spokesperson recounted.

Shortly after these distressing sounds, Tarungirira died at the girlfriend’s home.

The matter was immediately reported to the police.

Law enforcement officers attended the scene and transported the body to Neshuro District Hospital.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death, which remains unknown at this stage.

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers of ignoring persistent health complaints.

Inspector Dhewa reiterated his call for the public to prioritize their well-being.

His message, delivered in the wake of this tragedy, emphasized the critical difference between resting at home and seeking professional medical help when unusual symptoms arise.

The police have not indicated any suspicion of foul play and are awaiting the results of the post-mortem to guide their inquiries.

The community in Chief Neshuro is now left mourning the sudden loss of a man who, according to his family, had simply left home to look for work.
