Zimbabwean cities, usually bustling with life, now carry a somber undercurrent. As the festive season unfolds, joy is tinged with worry as news of accidents casts a shadow over celebrations. This year, the roads around the country seem particularly treacherous, claiming lives and leaving families shattered. We must heed this chilling call and prioritize safety before sorrow shrouds the season.

Reports by the Zimbabwe Republic Police paint a grim picture. Speeding vehicles, disregard for traffic rules, and a surge in alcohol-impaired drivers are fueling a dangerous cocktail. Overloaded public transport, dimmed by the setting sun, add another layer of vulnerability.

The consequences are devastating – families mourn, hospitals overflow, and the festive spirit is replaced by grief. Among many are the confirmed accounts by ZRP on the accidents taking place on the country’s roads,

“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 14/12/23 at the 263 kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road in which two people were killed whilst 11 others were injured when a Toyota Hiace kombi with 12 passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a Toyota Probox vehicle with four passengers on board. The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.”

This is not merely a statistic, but a human tragedy unfolding on our doorstep. The residents of Zimbabwe, must unite in a collective effort to curb this tide. Whether you’re a seasoned driver, a cautious pedestrian, or a jovial celebrant, remember to drive carefully.

“Police in Nkayi are investigating a hit-and-run road traffic accident which occurred on 14/12/23 at the 45 kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Nkayi Road in which an unknown motorist hit a pedestrian. The motorist did not stop after the accident. The victim sustained a a fractured right leg and is admitted at Inyathi District Hospital. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.”

As a driver your speed is not a badge of honor, but a potential harbinger of loss. Slow down, obey traffic rules, and avoid distractions. Remember, every life on the road is precious.

Passengers speak up if you feel unsafe especially in public transportation, your safety is the core of your family. Don’t hesitate to remind drivers of caution or choose alternative transport if necessary. Your voice can make a difference.

To the pedestrian crosswalks are your allies, not suggestions. Be visible, be cautious, and prioritize safety over haste. Your life matters, avoid haphazardly crossing roads during heavy traffic periods.

Celebrators let the festive spirit not cloud your judgment. Avoid driving under the influence and choose designated drivers. Remember, responsible celebration protects everyone.

This battle for safety requires a collective front from both authorities and the day citizen beyond individual call to action ,to make sure the city is safer and less lives are lost.

Increasing traffic patrols and crack down on reckless driving, will ensure people are consciously driving these. Improve road infrastructure and address safety hazards. This festive season came with heavy rains hence we call.
