France has become the first country in the world to explicitly include abortion rights in its constitution.

The decision was made by an overwhelming majority of parliamentarians, with 780 votes in favor and 72 against, leading to a standing ovation in the parliament in Versailles.

The country’s president, Emmanuel Macron hailed the move as “French pride” and emphasized that it conveys a universal message.

“We’re sending a message to all women that your body belongs to you and no one can decide for you,” he said.

Recent polls indicate that approximately 85% of the French public supported amending the constitution to safeguard the right to terminate pregnancies.

In 2022, the United States Supreme Court removed the right to abortion, allowing individual states to potentially ban the procedure.
