Zanu PF National Political Commissar Mike Bimha has revealed that the new slogan which calls for the extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure beyond 2028 is not recognised by the party, and reiterated that the party remains committed to follow the Constitution.

His statement comes after the “2030 VaMnangagwa vanenge vachipo” slogan was starting to take centre stage at the ruling party’s major gatherings. It started off at a provincial meeting that was held in Masvingo in February and spilled over to the 21 February movement were various leaders including the party’s Vice President Kembo Mohadi made it.

Speaking in an interview with a local news publication (Newsday), Bimha said he has no idea where the slogan came from because the commissariat department does not have a new slogan. He added that people are free to express themselves in their own way.

“The commissariat never said we have a new slogan. I don’t know. It didn’t come from the commissariat.

“People are free to express themselves in their own way. I want to suppose that they are saying in 2030 VaMnangagwa will still be alive and I think it’s a good wish for him to be still alive even beyond that. There is no problem with that.”

“Zanu PF follows the Constitution. Elections come every five years. We had elections and we won those elections. Elections will come again in 2028 and we will win anyway. That is where we are,” said Bimha.

The slogan had started fuelling suspicions that President Mnangagwa could be pushing for a third term of office to extend his rule. However, President Mnangagwa recently stated in an interview that there is no evidence to back such claims.
