Zimbabwe’s bid to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has gained significant momentum, thanks to the backing of Russia, which is one of the permanent members in the council.

Russia’s support was announced yesterday by the country’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, Nikolai Krasilnikov, at the State House after paying a courtesy call to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Addressing journalists, Ambassador Krasilnikov said Zimbabwe’s presence in UNSC will intensify efforts to establish a multipolar world.

“We look forward to having Zimbabwe as a United Nations Security Council non-permanent member very soon and we are confident that together we can intensify our efforts of establishing a new, more just and democratic multipolar world,” he said.

Zimbabwe’s bid to have the seat for the period of 2027 to 2028 has also drawn support from other countries in the Africa’s regional blocs like the African Union (A.U) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

If successful, Zimbabwe’s tenure on the UNSC would mark its third stint on the council, following previous terms in 1983-1984 and 1991-1992. The country’s bid is part of broader efforts to increase Africa’s representation in global decision-making bodies.
