A 62-year old ranger was trampled to death by an elephant in Kariba while on duty, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has revealed.

In a statement, ZimParks said the incident occurred when Josphat Mandishara and fellow rangers were conducting a routine extended patrol in the Gatche-gatche area. According to the Statement, the group had gone with supplies at the Gatche-gatche Irrigation Scheme.

“While Mandishara’s colleagues were occupied, he returned to the harbour where their boat was secured. Unfortunately, during his short trip, he encountered a charged elephant that emerged unexpectedly and fatally injured him.

“His remains were transported to Kariba District Hospital for a post-mortem and also the police were informed,” the statement reads.

As this disastrous incident happened, ZimParks deployed Rangers from Chirara Safari Area to manage the problem.

“The safety of our staff and wildlife is our utmost priority, and we are committed to take the necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future, ” ZimParks said
