Murehwa: A kombi conductor identified as Coconut is currently under police investigation for allegations of fatally assaulting and killing a passenger during a heated dispute over change.
The incident happened at Pajuru Growth Point (Bhora), at Zhanje bus terminal where the accused and the deceased (Name Withheld) had a heated exchange when passengers were disembarking from the kombi which was travelling from Harare.
Eyewitnesses said the two had a verbal altercation over change and seating arrangements. The situation escalated when the conductor allegedly pushed the passenger hard, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground. Witnesses described the scene as “chaotic and heartbreaking,” as the saw blood gushing out of the victim’s head after the impact.
Witnesses revealed that the victim, suffered a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. The kombi involved was allegedly driven by a man identified as Chiringa, who, along with the conductor, may face serious charges if found responsible.
Legal experts suggest that the conductor could face charges of culpable homicide or murder, depending on the intent and evidence gathered during the investigation.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has not yet issued an official statement confirming the case but has urged witnesses to come forward and assist with the investigation.
“We are treating this matter with the seriousness it deserves, and more details are yet to be revealed,” said an officer who attended the scene.
The incident has sparked outrage among local commuters and residents, who are demanding justice and better conduct from public transport operators.
