A 72 year old grandpa has been slapped with a 15 year jail term for attempting to rape his granddaughter who is 9 years old.

The incident took place in Chiweshe according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), where the offence was committed after the victim was sent to her grandfather’s home to retrieve matches by her stepmother.

“Upon arrival, the grandfather allegedly grabbed the child, took her into his bedroom, and attempted to sexually assault her,” reads the statement.

After all that drama, the young girl bravely shared the ordeal with her stepmother, who informed the child’s father.

The matter was reported to the authorities by the victim’s mother. A medical examination was done and the results were presented as evidence in court.

“The court’s verdict underscores the severity of the crime, particularly given the familial relationship between the perpetrator and the survivor.

” This case serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of children within family structures and the critical importance of protecting their safety and well-being, ” the NPAZ emphasised.
