A 21-year-old mentally challenged man, Mpunzi Nhlalo, has been arrested and taken into custody in connection with the brutal murder of his mother, Gugulethu Ndlovu, aged 40, in Masimini, Matabeleland North.
The tragic incident occurred on November 3, 2025, leaving the community in shock and grappling with the aftermath.
According to National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the suspect allegedly assaulted his mother to death with a log after a simple disagreement escalated into an uncontrollable fury.
“The suspect allegedly assaulted his mother, Gugulethu Ndlovu, to death with a log several times all over the body after a misunderstanding,” Commissioner Nyathi stated.
The police report suggests that the incident occurred at the Ndlovu homestead in Masimini Village 1, Kenilworth, where the suspect and his mother resided.
Neighbours who witnessed the aftermath described a scene of utter horror, with one local source recounting the tragic discovery.
“We heard screams, but by the time we rushed to the homestead, it was too late. Gugulethu’s lifeless body reportedly lay near the doorstep, bearing deep bruises and injuries consistent with a severe beating,” the source revealed.
The community is still reeling from the brutal nature of the attack, with many expressing collective disbelief and shock.
A neighbour, visibly shaken, expressed the community’s sentiment, saying, “It is heartbreaking. We never thought he could do this. She loved him. She was always trying to help him.”
This sentiment echoes throughout the village, painting a picture of a caring mother dedicated to her son’s well-being, making the outcome all the more difficult to accept.
The suspect’s known history of mental illness has raised questions about the support systems in place for individuals with mental health issues.
Commissioner Nyathi confirmed the arrest, stating, “Police in Inyathi arrested a mental patient, Mpunzi Nhlalo, in connection with a case of murder which occurred on 03/11/25 at Masimini Village 1, Kenilworth.”
The incident has left the community in mourning, with many calling for increased support and resources to address mental health issues and prevent such tragedies in the future.
The police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
