A heart-wrenching incident has shaken the Mabutweni suburb in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, after a two-month-old baby boy died under tragic circumstances.
The infant’s mother, a 22-year-old woman, allegedly breastfed her child while under the influence of crystal methamphetamine, a highly addictive and potent stimulant.
According to police reports, the mother had taken the substance with a friend at around 9 pm on November 3, 2025.
After breastfeeding the baby, both women fell into a deep sleep.
When the mother woke up the next morning at around 9 am, she discovered that her child had no signs of life.
A police report was immediately made, and the baby’s body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Bulawayo Deputy Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, confirmed that police are investigating a case of sudden death.
“When the mother woke up around 9 am the following morning, she discovered that the child had no signs of life. A police report was then made,” she said.
Assistant Inspector Ndlovu warned members of the public about the dangers of substance abuse, emphasizing that it can lead to tragic consequences.
“We warn drug abusers that drug use impairs coordination and judgment leading to risky behaviors, negligence, accidents, or crime,” she said.
“We also strongly warn those using and dealing in drugs that the long arm of the law will catch up with them,” she added.
This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of crystal methamphetamine abuse.
The substance, commonly known as “mutoriro,” is a highly addictive stimulant that can impair judgment and coordination, leading to reckless behavior and tragic outcomes.
The police are urging anyone with information about substance abuse or dealing to come forward and report to the authorities.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for increased awareness and support to combat the growing problem of substance abuse in Zimbabwe.
