China’s former sports chief, Gou Zhongwen, has been handed a death sentence with a two-year reprieve for accepting massive bribes and abusing his power.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Yancheng in Jiangsu Province delivered the verdict on Monday, citing the “extremely severe” circumstances of Gou’s crimes and the “extremely negative” social impact of his actions.

According to the court, Gou accepted over 236 million yuan (approximately $33.4 million) in bribes between 2009 and 2024, exploiting his high-level positions to secure benefits for various departments and individuals.

These benefits ranged from business operations and project approvals to job adjustments and construction deals.

“The court found that Gou systematically exploited a series of high-level positions, including his roles as Vice Mayor of Beijing, head of the sports administration, and later, as a senior political advisor,” the court statement read.

Gou, 68, served as the Director of the State General Administration of Sports from 2016 until 2022, overseeing China’s performance in major international competitions, including the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The court ruled that Gou’s political rights would be revoked for life, and all personal property would be confiscated.

In addition to the bribery charges, Gou was also sentenced to five years in prison for abusing his authority during his time as Vice Mayor of Beijing from 2012 to 2013.

However, the court decided to combine the penalties, resulting in the suspended death sentence.

The court acknowledged that Gou had confessed, voluntarily disclosed additional bribery not yet uncovered by investigators, and returned illicit gains, but stated that these factors were not enough to outweigh the gravity of his offenses.

Gou’s case is part of China’s ongoing anti-graft campaign, and his sentence reflects the country’s tough stance on corruption.

In China, a suspended death sentence is typically commuted to life imprisonment if no new crimes are committed during the two-year probation period.

Gou’s involvement in high-profile events, including the Beijing Winter Olympics, has drawn significant attention to his case.

His swift fall from power marks one of the highest-profile corruption cases in recent years, sending a strong message about China’s commitment to rooting out corruption.
