A tragic train accident took place yesterday between Mutare and Machipanda which claimed 3 lives and damaged the locomotive’s cargo, the National Railways of Zimbabwe has announced.

In a statement,  NRZ said the accident happened around 21:00hrs. It is suspected that a brake failure could have caused the accident because it happened at a sharp curve which the crew failed to negotiate.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the locomotive, which was hauling 14 wagons loaded with nine export chrome concentrates and five granite blocks, may have experienced a brake failure.

“Sadly, the three NRZ crew members onboard the train were unable to escape and lost their lives in the accident,” reads the statement.

NRZ stated that further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
