WASHINGTON –The Democrats have won the Senate and the House in the US midterm elections, taking control of Congress for the rest of Donald Trump’s presidency.
In a stunning rebuke to the White House, President Trump said the Democrats “did a good job” and acknowledged the Iran war, and higher fuel prices, played a part in the defeat.
“There is no mystery about why this happened,” our North America editor writes. “Voters are angry about the cost of living, and blame the president.”
In the Senate race, Democrats picked up a string of victories in Republican strongholds, including Texas, Ohio, and Kansas, which last elected a Democrat almost 100 years ago.
In Michigan, the Senate race has not been called, but Democrat Abdul El-Sayed claims victory, telling voters: “You took a chance on the unlikeliest of candidates.”
With control of Congress, Democrats will now be able to frustrate President Trump’s plans for the next two years, and could even try to impeach him for a third time.
