The Director General of the the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) Gift Machengete has been elected for the position of Vice President of the Council of African Regulators ahead of the Transform Africa Summit to be held in Victoria Falls starting on Wednesday.

Machengete will run the vice presidency office of the Council of Regulators for 2 years.

Machengete said he was please and humbled to be elected vice president of the council while hosting this ostentatious event, the Transform Africa Summit in, Zimbabwe.

“As the elected Vice President of the Council of African Regulators i wish to promote agile regulation through encouraging the implementation of new regulatory tools through research and collaboration,” said Machengete.

The development was revealed by Smart Africa Chief Executive Officer and Director General, Lacina Kone who said the summit will run under the theme “Accelerating the creation of a single digital market by 2030″.

The objective of the Council of Regulators is to collaborate towards agile Information Communication Technology regulation in Africa.

He said the Council of Regulators was an opportunity for them to share with other Director Generals and stakeholders the progress they have made since their last Council of African Regulators meeting and determine their next concrete steps in line with the Smart Africa new triennial strategy 2023-2025. The aim is to prioritise cross-border projects and make a greater impact on the digital transformation of the African continent.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Machengete emphasised the critical role played by artificial intelligence in the digital world where computer programs are adding convenience and providing solutions for a better future

“To prepare for this “Now – Future” calls for agile regulation which can only be achieved through Collaborative Regulation and Regulation Through International Cooperation, among other regulatory methods,” Dr. Machengete said.

The summit will spotlight updates on One Africa Network, Cybersecurity, and 5G Regulation in Africa in pursuit of meaningfully participating in the fourth industrial revolution as a continent.
