Zimbabwean midfielder Sean Fusire has apologized to coach Michael Nees, the team, and fans for his withdrawal from the Warriors squad ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

Fusire cited logistical concerns and a history of injuries from long-haul flights as the reason for his decision.

According to Fusire, he requested an upgrade in flights to ensure he would be fit for upcoming international games and club duties.

“In my opinion and thinking about my previous injury history and the physical demand on my body due to being under cramped travel situations, I requested for an upgrade in flights,” Fusire explained.

The 20-year-old Sheffield United midfielder initially inquired about the total travel duration, which would have exceeded 40 hours.

He requested an upgrade to business or economy premium class, but this was declined by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

Fusire then offered to use his unpaid allowances from the last camp to cover the upgrade for the final 11-hour flight from South Africa to the UK, but received no response.

“I didn’t feel comfortable traveling without a resolution to the matter,” Fusire said, adding that he has no issues with ZIFA or the country.

“I confirm that I have no issues at all with ZIFA, the team, or the country. I am very proud to be Zimbabwean.”

Fusire’s withdrawal has sparked criticism of ZIFA’s handling of the situation.

One commentator noted that ZIFA’s decision-making process seems to be driven by emotions rather than professionalism.

“ZIFA shot itself in the foot due to persons who are driven more by emotions than professionalism,” Tafadzwa Stick Chigandiwa said.

Despite missing out on the current camp, Fusire remains committed to playing for Zimbabwe in the future.

“I remain ready and honoured to be given another chance to play for Zimbabwe in the future,” he said.

Fusire wishes the team good luck in their upcoming games against Benin and Rwanda.

ZIFA has not publicly commented on Fusire’s statement, but the association’s handling of the situation has raised questions about player welfare and logistics management.

The incident highlights the need for better communication and understanding between players and administrators to avoid similar situations in the future.
