The Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs have voted to increase the number of teams in the top-flight league from 18 to 20, as part of a stabilization project to revive local football.

This decision, unanimously endorsed by the clubs in Harare, means no team will be relegated this season.

“The decision by the PSL clubs means that no team will be relegated this season,” said officials, adding that the four promoted teams, FC Hunters, Hardrock, Agama, and Bulawayo Chiefs, will put the number of teams in the league to 22 during the 2026 season.

Six teams will be relegated at the end of the 2026 season, with the league being trimmed to 20 teams for the 2027 season.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is engaging football stakeholders on reforms of local football.

The decision has saved several teams, including Kwekwe FC, Yadah, Dynamos, Caps United, Highlanders, and Bikita Minerals, from relegation.

“This is to enable the smooth transition of the league into a 20-team pool in line with international standards,” said officials.

ZIFA had proposed the increase, citing alignment with international best practices and enhanced competitive balance and opportunities.

The move is expected to promote inclusivity, talent identification, and balanced regional representation.

The PSL clubs will now focus on preparing for the 2026 season with 22 teams.
