President Emmerson Mnangagwa has made new senior appointments in state entities as he continues to cement his autonomy.  The appointments have been made in four offices namely the Attorney General, National Railways of Zimbabwe, Public Health Advisor and Special Advisor to the President with immediate effect.

The announcement was made by the Chief Secretary Dr Martin Rushwaya who said Virginia Mabhiza has been appointed as the new  Attorney General of Zimbabwe with effect from 1 November.

”His Excellency the President has in terms of Section 114(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe appointed Mrs. Virginia Mabhiza as the Attorney General of Zimbabwe with effect from 1 November 2023.

“ She is a qualified legal practitioner and has represented the country locally, regionally and internationally on matters of justice,” he said.

Mike Madiro has been appointed  as the Chairperson of the National Railways of Zimbabwe.

“Mr. Madiro is an accountant long standing and former Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage as well as the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development,” he said.

Dr Agnes Mahomva has been appointed  as the Public Health Advisor to the President with immediate effect

“She played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic making sure there was coordination and division of labor among Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies. This decision has been necessitated by the need to strengthen public health promotion efforts and enhance the country’s response to public health emergencies because public health issues span beyond the mandate of the ministry responsible for health,” said Dr Rushwaya.

Jorum Gumbo retained his position as the Special Advisor to the President

“His Excellency the President has appointed Honorable J.M. Gumbo as Special Advisor to His Excellency the President responsible for monitoring implementation of Government Programs with immediate effect. The Special Advisor will provide advice and independent coverage of the status of project implementation countrywide,” he said.
