President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday commissioned the Champion Foods milling plant in Harare which has the capacity to produce 500 metric tonnes  of maize meal and 200 metric tonnes of wheat per day.

The plant, which is stationed in Tynwald is expected to boost milling production in the country.  Speaking at the official opening of the facility, President Mnangagwa said the milling plant will help to complement the current milling capacity and boost production volumes.

“I congratulate Champion Foods Private Limited for the entrepreneurial initiative as well as the great milestones realised at this site. The contributions you are set to make in the agricultural value addition space are welcome. To this end the massive milling plant will help complement the current local milling capacity, increase our product volumes, create employment opportunities and export-led production,” President Mnangagwa said.

The milling plant comes at a time where the country is expected to get depressed yields due to poor rainfall that was received during the farming season because of the El-Nino. However, President Mnangagwa assured the country that the government will assist every person in need of food.

“We want to ensure that everyone gets food. We did not get good rains but the Second Republic will ensure everyone gets food,” he said.
