The United Kingdom and the United States of America have forged a deal to jointly develop and implement rigorous testing methods for advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The bilateral agreement, signed yesterday, focuses on evaluating the safety of AI tools and the underlying systems that support them.

United Kingdom’s technology minister, Michelle Donelan has described AI as the defining technology challenge of our generation and emphasized that ensuring its safe development is a global issue that requires collaboration.
“We have always been clear that ensuring the safe development of AI is a shared global issue,” Donelan stated.

“Only by working together can we address the technology’s risks head on and harness its enormous potential to help us all live easier and healthier lives.” She added.

The UK’s secretary of state for science, innovation, and technology confirmed that this agreement builds upon the commitments made at the AI Safety Summit held in Bletchley Park in November 2023.

The summit, attended by prominent figures in the AI field, led to the establishment of AI Safety Institutes in both the UK and the US.

The objective of the agreement is to establish methods that can effectively assess the potential risks and ensure the responsible and accountable development of AI technologies.
