The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested a man who vandalised about 83 tombstones at various gravesites at the Warren Hill cemetery.

The man, Gilbert Makundatsamba (34) was nabbed on 2 May at the cemetery where he had visited to destroy more graves. It is estimated that the total value of the 83 tombstones that he destroyed is US$45 000.

Makundatsamba appeared in court last weekend where he was remanded in custody by magistrate Caroline Matanga who ruled that he should undergo a medical assessment to check his mental state.

The development comes after  news broke out recently on social media that various graves were being destroyed at the cemetery. Vandalising graves is a criminal offence which may attract a jail sentence of six months.
