The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has relaunched regular passenger train services on the Harare–Mutare and Bulawayo–Victoria Falls routes.
According to the NRZ, this is a major step toward reviving affordable and reliable public transport in the country.
The parastatal confirmed that the services will run twice weekly using standard and economy class coaches.
The move follows strong public interest demonstrated during recent trials held at the Sanganayi Travel Expo.
In a statement the NRZ detailed public’s positive reception,
“The enthusiastic response during the Travel Expo confirmed strong public interest in rail travel. We are now pursuing plans to offer train services more regularly
across the country.”
NRZ board chairperson, Michael Chikono echoed this commitment, saying the reintroduction forms part of a broader strategy to restore rail transport’s critical role.
“This is a step towards making rail transport accessible, reliable, and affordable once again,” Chikono stated.
He also announced that the parastatal is working on logistics to resume the regular tourist train between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.
The newly resumed services feature competitive fares.
The Harare–Mutare economy class fare is set at US$5 per adult.
The Bulawayo–Victoria Falls economy class fare is US$9 per adult.
The schedule is designed to accommodate weekend travel and commuting.
