Government is advancing its clean energy agenda with the commissioning of the Glovers Solar Plant in Munyati, Kwekwe, by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday. Once fully completed, the plant will have a projected output of 110 megawatts.
The first phase of the project is now operational, with over 18,000 solar panels, 31 inverters, and two smart transformers generating up to 10 megawatts.
Funded 51% by the Public Service Commission’s pension fund, the plant is already feeding power into the national grid to support mining and agricultural operations in the area.
Speaking at the commissioning, President Mnangagwa said such projects are vital for modernisation, industrialisation, and rural development.
“Projects of this nature are critical for modernisation, industrialisation, increased agricultural productivity, and the development of rural industrial systems,” he said.
“This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to diversify the national energy mix and build resilience against climate change and energy challenges.”
“Our country is endowed with abundant solar radiation. Zuva rakawanda munyika yedu. The sun is our silent partner. The construction of this solar power plant aligns with the objectives of the National Development Strategy 2 and our broader green energy agenda.”
“Reliable, affordable, and clean energy drives economic productivity, attracts investment, creates jobs, and improves the quality of life for our citizens,” President Mnangagwa added.
Acting Chairperson of New Glovers Solar Company, Ainos Ngadya, said the project will expand to produce 20 megawatts in its next phase.
“This is a phased project moving towards almost 20 megawatts. It is clean in terms of carbon emissions,” Ngadya said.
Public Service Commission Chairperson Vincent Hungwe invited more private sector players to partner on investments that secure pensions while growing the economy.
“We extend an open invitation to like-minded investors to collaborate with us in scaling impactful investments that secure pensions while building the productive capacity of our nation,” Hungwe said.
