After nearly five years of closure for extensive renovations, the National Sports Stadium is set to reopen its doors with a blockbuster Castle Lager Premiership clash between champions Scotland and giants CAPS United on May 31.

The Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture confirmed that the fixture will serve as an operational test match, a critical step before the facility is fully commissioned for international and local events.

Explaining the purpose of the test event, Permanent Secretary Nicholas Moyo said the match is designed to assess various aspects of the stadium’s readiness.

He stated that “the operational test match is intended to assess stadium systems, spectator flow, safety protocols, seating arrangements, pitch standards and overall operational readiness of the facility ahead of full-scale international and local sporting activities.”

Moyo further emphasized the significance of public participation, urging fans to turn out in large numbers.

He noted that “members of the public are encouraged to come in their numbers and witness this historic moment as the giant National Sports Stadium prepares to reclaim its place as the home of Zimbabwean football and international sporting excellence.”

The stadium, which has undergone a comprehensive facelift, now features a range of modern upgrades.

According to the Ministry, the renovated facility boasts upgraded bucket seats, modernised amenities, improved playing surfaces, and an enhanced spectator experience designed to meet international standards.

The Permanent Secretary also highlighted the broader importance of the renovation project for the country’s sports landscape.

He expressed that “let us unite in celebrating this important milestone in the revival of Zimbabwean sports infrastructure.”

The choice of Scotland and CAPS United as the first teams to play at the refurbished venue adds to the occasion’s historic weight.

Both sides are expected to field strong lineups as they battle for league points while also testing the new pitch and stadium systems in real-time conditions.

Fans and football stakeholders have eagerly awaited the stadium’s reopening since its closure in 2019.

The venue, once the heartbeat of Zimbabwean football, had fallen into disrepair, forcing top-flight matches to be played at smaller, less-equipped grounds.

The extensive renovations were aimed at restoring the stadium to a standard capable of hosting CAF and FIFA-sanctioned matches.

As part of the operational test, authorities will monitor crowd movement, ticketing efficiency, entry and exit procedures, emergency response times, and the functionality of changing rooms and media facilities.

Any issues identified during the May 31 match will be addressed before the stadium is officially commissioned for full-scale use.

Kick-off time for the historic encounter is yet to be announced, but anticipation is already building across the country.

For Zimbabwean football, the reopening marks not just a return to a beloved venue, but a symbolic step toward reclaiming its place on the continental stage.
