Zimbabwe will mark International Paramedics Day for the first time on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, with a series of public activities aimed at celebrating emergency medical professionals and their life-saving work.

Coordinated by Health and Safety Solutions, the national event will be held at Town House in Harare under the 2026 theme “Innovate & Integrate.”

Government officials, healthcare professionals, emergency medical service providers, corporate partners and members of the public are expected to attend.

The gathering is meant to recognize the critical role paramedics play in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system and to strengthen public awareness of emergency medical services.

A highlight of the day will be an ambulance parade.

Emergency medical fleets from various service providers will assemble at Freedom Square before processing through major streets in the Harare Central Business District and ending at Town House.

The procession is designed to showcase the scale and readiness of the country’s EMS fleet.

The public will also witness a live mock emergency drill.

The simulation will demonstrate the speed, expertise and coordination Zimbabwe’s paramedics use when responding to real emergencies.

Organizers say the drill will give citizens a first-hand view of how EMS teams assess, stabilize and transport patients under pressure.

Education and community engagement will run alongside the main events.

A Citizen First Aid Corner will allow members of the public to learn basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid from trained emergency professionals.

Corporate partners and healthcare service providers will mount exhibitions of products and services, while outstanding and long-serving EMS personnel will be honoured during an Emergency Medical Services Awards Ceremony.

Paramedicine is among the world’s fastest-growing professions.

Paramedics now work across a wide range of roles and settings, and as healthcare systems evolve, paramedics continue to adapt and innovate to meet the changing needs of patients while delivering high-quality care in diverse environments.

This year’s theme captures that shift.

“Innovate & Integrate” celebrates how paramedics are advancing practice, improving patient care, embracing digital technologies, strengthening organisational, service and clinical integration, pushing research boundaries and leading education.

The theme reflects the profession’s clinical versatility, adaptability and growing role as an integral component of modern healthcare systems.

International Paramedics Day was launched in 2022 and is observed annually on 8 July, marking the birth of Dominique-Jean Larrey, widely regarded as the father of modern ambulance services.

The global initiative was created and is coordinated by the Royal College of Paramedics in the United Kingdom, with support from professional paramedic organisations worldwide.

Speaking ahead of the celebrations, Organising Secretary Getrude Chiwisa outlined the objectives of the event.

She said “the event seeks to recognise the dedication, sacrifices and professionalism of emergency medical personnel while strengthening public awareness of emergency medical services and promoting collaboration across the healthcare sector.”

Chiwisa added that “the inaugural International Paramedics Day celebrations provide Zimbabweans with an opportunity to appreciate the professionals who stand between life-threatening crises and successful hospital outcomes while showcasing the evolution of paramedicine as an essential pillar of healthcare delivery.”

With ambulances lining Harare’s streets, live drills on display and hands-on first aid training available, the event is expected to draw large crowds.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend and join the online conversation using #InternationalParamedicsDay2026, #IPD2026 and #ParamedicsZimbabwe.

The day marks a milestone for Zimbabwe’s EMS sector.

By bringing paramedics, policymakers and the public together, organizers hope to build trust in emergency services and highlight how innovation and integration can save more lives across the country.
