A Guruve man who terrorised communities as a serial rapist will effectively spend decades behind bars after a Harare magistrate sentenced him to an effective 89 years in prison for a string of sexual offences, attempted murder, and robbery.

Anymore Zvitsva, 35, was convicted on 10 counts after a trial before Harare Magistrate Francis Mapfumo, who handed down multiple sentences with specific concurrency orders.

In explaining the court’s reasoning, Magistrate Mapfumo pointed to the accused’s prior criminal record as a key aggravating factor.

He said “the court also considered that Zvitsva is not a first-time offender, having previously served a 48-month prison sentence in Guruve.”

The magistrate further noted that the offender displayed calculated cruelty in selecting his targets.

According to Mapfumo, the court found that Zvitsva “deliberately targeted vulnerable victims who had no one to assist them, showing that the crimes were carefully planned.”

However, the court did acknowledge certain mitigating circumstances before arriving at its decision.

Mapfumo stated that the judicial officer “had considered several mitigating and aggravating factors,” including that the accused is 35 years old with two children, aged 11 and 12, who currently live with their mother.

The magistrate also noted that Zvitsva pleaded guilty to the charges, which, in the magistrate’s words “saved the court’s time.”

The sentences were structured as follows: Count 1 drew 20 years, Count 2 received seven years (running concurrently with Count 1), Count 3 received 12 years, Count 4 seven years, Count 5 ten years (concurrent with Count 4), Count 6 seven years, Count 7 twenty years (concurrent with Count 8), Count 8 seven years, Count 9 twenty years, and Count 10 twenty years (concurrent with Count 9).

Zimbabwe’s First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, was present in court during the sentencing, underscoring the public interest in the case and the government’s stance on gender-based violence.

The effective 89-year term, shaped by the magistrate’s concurrency rulings, ensures Zvitsva will remain incarcerated for the vast majority of his natural life, bringing a measure of closure to his victims and their families in Guruve and surrounding areas.
