Nigeria secured a spot in the Unity Cup final yesterday after defeating Zimbabwe by 2 goals to nil.

From the opening whistle, Nigeria imposed their rhythm, controlling possession and pressing high up the pitch.

Zimbabwe, under interim coach Kaitano Tembo, struggled to find fluidity in attack.

The first half saw Nigeria break the deadlock through a well-worked move that caught the Zimbabwean defense flat-footed.

The second half followed a similar script, with Nigeria doubling their lead midway through the period, capitalizing on a defensive lapse that Tembo’s men failed to clear.

After the final whistle, a visibly disappointed Tembo addressed the media, analyzing where his team fell short.

The interim coach pointed to the players’ inability to maintain consistent pressure on Nigerian ball carriers, a flaw he believes Nigeria ruthlessly exploited.

Tembo explained that his side’s pressing was irregular throughout the match, sometimes arriving too late and other times lacking collective coordination.

He noted that against a technically gifted Nigerian side, any lapse in pressing intensity would be punished, and that is precisely what unfolded on the night.

He argued that the defeat was not a result of his players showing excessive fear or deference to their more fancied opponents.

Instead, the coach clarified that Zimbabwe entered the contest believing they could compete on equal terms, but tactical inconsistencies and poor decision-making in the final third undermined their efforts.

“Our loss wasn’t because we gave them too much respect. We had our moments, but we were not consistent with our pressing, and when we got into good areas, we didn’t take our chances,” Said Kaitano.

Beyond the pressing issues, Tembo lamented his team’s profligacy in front of goal.

Zimbabwe created clear-cut opportunities across the game.

However, none found the back of the net.

The coach further elaborated that on another night, even one conversion could have shifted the momentum and forced Nigeria into a more anxious closing phase.

He insisted that the 2-0 scoreline did not tell the full story of Zimbabwe’s resilience.

He observed that his backline managed to restrict Nigeria’s attack for long stretches, and the team showed commendable shape out of possession.

Tembo also highlighted the fighting spirit displayed by his young squad, many of whom are still adapting to international football.

He said those elements provide a foundation to build upon as Zimbabwe looks ahead to upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

“There are positives to take. We competed, we never gave up, and we learned exactly what we need to fix. That’s valuable,” he said.

Nigeria will now await the winner of the second semifinal to determine their opponent in the Unity Cup final.

For Zimbabwe, the focus is now on fighting for third place, where Tembo will hope his side translates lessons into tangible results.

Despite the defeat, the interim coach’s message was clear: this Zimbabwe team refuses to be intimidated, but they must sharpen their execution in both defensive and offensive transitions.
